Fauna observation organization World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia exposed an astonishing report saying that millions of turtle eggs are traded every month in Indonesia. Most of those eggs are traded for consumption purpose.

The organization further exposed their finding that in Kalimantan alone, 300,000 turtle eggs are traded freely every month at a price between 5,000 to 7,000 Rupiah each. The more horrifying fact is that out of 100 turtle nests identified every day, only two are saved to be conserved.

Campaign executive of WWF for marine, Aulia Rahman, told the press in Kuta said that among reasons behind high consumption of turtle eggs in Indonesia is that some regions are still using turtle eggs as their main food ingredients served for visiting tourists. “Turtle eggs have been used as a tourism commodity. In certain regions such as East-Kalimantan, Bangka Belitung, and the west coast of Padang, turtle eggs are sold freely on the sidewalk”, Aulia said.

Aulia further informed that in addition to domestic consumption, turtle eggs are also exported to Malaysia. The situation endangered the sustainability of the species even more.
